Salgado is an economist who found his calling with photography while working with the World Bank in Africa. He has published numerous books which focus on nature, environmental awareness, and human communities which live in accordance to their ancestral traditions and cultures. He and his work are the subject of the film The Salt of the Earth (2014), which won a special award at Cannes and was nominated for a 2015 Academy Award.
